Any mention of the Ten Commandments usually brings to mind “hard” words. Words like law, duty, legalism, guilt. But nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to God’s Ten Commandments. To be sure, at first glance, they may seem to be challenging, demanding, even irrelevant and out of date in our modern society, but upon closer examination, we will see that they are really a way of living that brings blessing.
God’s purpose in giving the Ten Commandments was not to restrict us, but to free us up to be what he created us to be. His Commandments lay out the ‘best way” of living that leads to contentment, peace and joy while at the same time bringing him glory and honor. No, the Ten Commandments are not ALL of the story. And we will never keep them perfectly, but they begin to give us a way of living which eventually reveals our need for a Savior. That Savior is Jesus. That is the rest of the story.
